The Global Navigation Satellite System, popularly known as GNSS is a system or arrangement of satellites that provide time and positioning data from space received by the GNSS receivers. This data is then used to determine the locations of various objects.
Going by the definition, the GNSS (literally) provides global coverage. GNSS is a standard generic name for satellite navigation that provides autonomous geospatial coverage at a global scale. This term includes but is not limited to GPS, Galileo (Europe), BeiDou (China), and other systems. The term GNSS is used worldwide.
GNSS uses a connection or constellation of satellites that constantly provide information on a global scale. This information is accurate, consistent, and available at all times. Although satellite failure is a rare occurrence, if one satellite fails- the GNSS shall pick up signals and information from another satellite. This helps reduce downtime and redundancy to a great extent.
GPS is one of the components of the GNSS. The term "GPS" is so widely used, it is now synonymous with GNSS but we need to know that GPS is a part of GNSS. The United States GPS is a collection of 32 Earth-orbiting satellites in 6 orbital planes. The exact number of satellites varies because the old ones have been replaced or are redundant.
GNSS performance is based on 4 different criteria:
Continuity- This means how long can a GNSS function without being interrupted.
Integrity- This criteria deals with the system's ability to provide confidence in its data, and in the case of an oddity, provide an alarm or notification
Accuracy- This deals with the GNSS provided position of a subject versus the real-time position, time and speed of such subject.
Availability- The availability refers to the time that a signal fulfils its accuracy, integrity and continuity criterions.
This technology is widely used to pinpoint the location of a receiver (Eg. Cellphone) anywhere across the globe. Satellite navigation has become an integral part of modern civilisation anywhere mobility is required.
GNSS is mainly applied to transportation systems to provide accurate, real-time data. In this system, a reference is essential as all navigation can take place from a point of reference.
The main aim of GNSS is to make positioning simple, efficient, and cost-effective.
This dynamic system is used in navigation in automobiles, air transportation, ships and boats, and even military! This technology is used in almost every industry you can name. It is being used in disaster management, aviation, adventure, travel and tourism, agriculture, mapping and surveying, navigation, and communication to name a few.
Today, even when we walk from our location to an unfamiliar one- we use GNSS technology to ensure we are taking the shortest, the most time-saving route. This technology is entwined in our lives and we use it multiple times a day without even realising what powerful machinery we have at the drop of a hat.
This technology has a lasting impact on us as a civilisation, and it shall continue to develop and advance us as a species.
