Satellite contract awards by SDA under scrutiny

Last month, L3Harris and SpaceX were awarded Space Development Agency (SDA) contracts for eight missile-tracking satellites. However, the project has got stalled as Airbus and Raytheon have filed protests with the Government Accountability Office challenging the contracts.

Airbus filed its protest October 28 and Raytheon on November 3. This has put the projects on hold until the dispute is resolved. SpaceX’s contract is worth $149 million and L3Harris’ contract is worth $193.5 million. Each of them is required to build four satellites to detect and track ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

These eight satellites are known as Tracking Layer Tranche 0. The Government Accountability Office has to issue a decision on the conflict by February 11, 2021. Airbus has concerns regarding the government’s evaluation process, and that’s why has filed a protest.

Space Development Agency has informed to be working with Government Accountability Office to achieve fast, accurate and equitable resolution to the protests. SDA intends to launch the eight satellites in fall 2022. Hope the protests will not delay the same.
