Remote sensing has emerged as a useful tool for studying the planet in the last few years.

It means "scanning" of the Earth's surface with the help of satellites and GIS technology. This includes but is not limited to CubeSats, satellites, aircraft that study the Earth's surface, and other technology that examines the Earth's surface.

The use of remote sensing can be widely seen in geography, cartography, environmental sciences, and research.

In environmental sciences, remote sensing helps in the systematic collection of data, surveys, and analysis of such data.

This data is used to understand and sustainably use natural resources to conserve the environment.

Management of natural resources is crucial for survival, and remote sensing data helps make sound decisions basis relevant and accurate information. 

Environmental Science is a broad field that uses remote sensing in almost every aspect.

Exploration, identification, and study of the environment are mainly possible because we can study the Earth and its resources from above with the help of remote sensing technology. It identifies various landforms, resources, availability and feasibility. 

Remote sensing not only helps with resource management, but it also helps in understanding underdeveloped regions. We can plan for their development and growth based on the availability of resources in that area and the neighbouring regions.

Mining and extraction of minerals and natural fuels widely uses remote sensing to identify regions of the heavy concentration of these materials, helping expand industries. It helps to understand the quantity in which these resources are available and systematically plan their sustainable usage.

Urban environmental development uses remote sensing at a large scale since urbanisation is rapid and consistent in today's world. All countries are using remote sensing to study their land and analyse areas of improvement in terms of urbanisation like the development of transportation, infrastructure, and public facilities.

Agriculture uses remote sensing to identify landforms, soil composition, and fertility to understand growth patterns and potential of crops. This has helped farmers across the world and educated them about the kind of vegetables they can grow best in the type of land they have. 

Forestry is crucially covered by remote sensing to ensure there is enough forest cover and deforestation is under control. Commercial use of land leads to massive deforestation. Remote sensing helps keep a bird's eye view of the areas to see how much forest covers need to be improved or preserved. 

SONAR, a form of remote sensing, is used to study the ocean and preserve life below the waters. This helps strike an environmental balance between using resources from oceans and control and monitor their overuse. This also helps study, monitor, and control the carbon footprint and plastic that is disposed into the oceans.

Natural disasters such as cyclones, tsunamis, and other environmental catastrophes can be monitored and prevented with the help of remote sensing. Even if a crisis cannot be averted, remote sensing can help alert the people so that action can be taken before any damage occurs.

These are only a fraction of the areas where remote sensing is used daily to preserve, save, and study the environment. The list is non-exhaustive and is ever increasing. 

With technology improving by the day, we can only imagine a world where the environment is preserved and the planet is saved, but if it happens, a major credit would go to remote sensing.
