The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has announced the formation of OGC API – Styles’ Standards Working Group (SWG). The purpose behind this is to maintain OGC API – Styles core standard as also its extensions.

End-users must apply styles in order to portray resources like coverages, feature collections. For this, they must take the help of the raw geospatial data and then render it in a persistent manner to provide important information.

OGC API – Styles will share the uniform methods to publish and provide these styles as resources. It will define the requirements to describe styles and distribute the edited or new ones.

The method to map symbology and portraying rules to data schema, to multiple datasets and encoding have become extensive, due to which the desire to reuse styles have grown.

Sharing of styles is very limited. More often, styles are formed in partnerships to the geographic resources in order to portray and the GIS platform or computing environment through which it will be applied.

Finally, geospatial resources users are very often in a position to come up with specialized styles or come up with an exclusive one.

OGC API – Styles’ will also help in better access as also applying multiple styles that are provided through the help of API.
