Moscow launches autonomous vehicle for recording parking violations

The world’s first autonomous car fitted with equipment that enables it to record parking contraventions was launched in Moscow. It drives around central streets of Moscow, said Alexander Polyakov, Director of the MosTransProekt Research Institute, that was responsible for developing the vehicle.

Since February, 2020 an unmanned vehicle has been driving in the Basmanny district and with the help of the photofixation equipment has been recording parking violations, just like similar vehicles with drivers. About a thousand cars are administered daily in the driving zone of the Autonomous MEV.

The Autonomous MEV runs on V2X (vehicle-to-everything) 1 technology – it can communicate with traffic lights and detectors on the way, transmit and receive data through LTE communication channels and through radio frequency interaction.

When the unmanned vehicle goes to administer the parking space, it drives up to the gates of the Institute, the traffic light “sees” it, opens the gate for the vehicle and turns on the green light.

The MEV launch project was prepared by the subordinate to the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of Moscow State Institution MosTransProekt FAU RosdorNII, Moscow Automobile and Road Construction State Technical University (MADI).
