T. Christopher Peoples has stepped down as president of land surveying firm Pitzman's Surveying Group Inc. and sold his majority stake in the business to minority owner Bill Berthold, who will take the reins as president. Terms of the sale, announced Tuesday, weren't disclosed.

Maplewood-based Pitzman's, which does business as Pitzman's Co. of Surveyors & Engineers, provides land surveying, 3D modeling, construction staking and land development services to municipal, commercial and residential real estate owners in the St. Louis region.

Peoples began working at Pitzman's in 2001, and Berthold acquired Pitzman's in 2006. Peoples acquired a majority stake in Pitzman's in October 2010 when he became president. In addition to previously retaining a minority stake in Pitzman's, Berthold had served as vice president and principal land surveyor, officials said.

Effective Thursday, Pitzman's returned to being a subsidiary of Frontenac Engineering Group Inc., of which Berthold also is president. Peoples now will take on the role of civil engineering design consultant for Frontenac Engineering Group, according to a statement emailed to the Business Journal.

"In my new role, I will continue to engage with the current Pitzman's Co. clients to make sure there is a smooth transition with any current and/or future projects," Peoples said in the email. "Additionally, as a Design Consultant I will be responsible for working within the (Ferguson Engineering Group) Civil Design Studio to acquire work, and then overseeing the successful execution of multiple projects as the Project Manager."

Peoples also has started a new consulting firm, Peoples Land Services Inc., to provide land development services for real estate developers and investors, he said in an email.

“Purchasing majority ownership of Pitzman’s Co. allows us to return services critical to our daily operations back in house," Berthold said in a release announcing the deal. "Additionally, this will allow us to implement standards and procedures used within Frontenac Engineering Group Inc. to improve operations, allow for growth and provide all of our clients with a more inclusive scope of services.”

Pitzman's was established in 1859 by Major Julius Pitzman, officials said.
