Yes, Game of Thrones, the hit television series by HBO has heavily relied on Lidar to create and recreate their sets. Wondering how? 

Imaging software and sophisticated hardware have been used to enable 3D spatial data and visual effects. 

A team utilised Teledyne Optech's Lidar technology to create detailed 3-D representation of the old city of Dubrovnik, which is in Croatia, as the model for the fictional city of King's Landing. 

Lidar has seen increased popularity in creating realistic computer-generated imagery and visual effects.

Lidar has traditionally been used in industries like construction, civil engineering, and infrastructure and now has piqued the interest of the film and entertainment industry. There has been extensive use of this technology in arts and film to create VFX. 

This powerful technology can scan and map buildings, areas, and even whole cities in three dimensions with great detail and accuracy. In simple terms, Lidar can create exact replicas of locations without having a physical team mapping and measuring the locations. 

It has benefitted multiple industries, including television, because it has reduced the time and money costs considerably and helped enhance the quality of the data available.

The 3D models in Game of Thrones were generated using various Lidar technologies and integrating imagery and visualisation. It included using Teledyne's Maverick and Polaris systems than enabled to get both mobile and fixed imagery for the hit series.

It used various modes of capturing data like moving on road vehicles and aerial scanners to help capture and assemble data that helped create the life like imagery for the locations shows in the show. Many stationary lidar scanners were also placed throughout to capture data across locations to get imagery. 

This imagery is high resolution, high quality, and the team generated 3D point clouds in Dubrovnik using various Lidar technologies. The Lidar point clouds were then colourised with digital camera imagery and image fusion software. Teledyne boasts how it has enabled GoT and HBO to go from Dubrovnik to King's Landing. 

'Jon Snow may know nothin', but the team knew how to create the infamous Red DungeonBay and the Backwater Bay with the help of Lidar. 

Television has become increasingly reliant on various GIS technology over the years. In Game of Thrones, the graphics especially stole the show. 

The entertainment industry is on a boom in modern times, and technology is helping improve the quality by the day.  It is only a matter of time Lidar become completely integrated into the entertainment industry, and then, the quality would skyrocket even further.
