India and Nigeria sign MoU on space cooperation

According to a report by OneIndia, India and Nigeria have signed an agreement on space cooperation on August 13, 2020. In a statement, the External Affairs Ministry stated that the Memorandum of Understanding between India and Nigeria will be focused on ‘cooperation within the exploration and use of space for peaceful purposes.’ It was concluded at the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, Abuja.

The statement said that the meeting was witnessed by V Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs and ISRO Scientific Secretary, R Umamaheswaran through a video link. While Onu, Minister of Science and Technology, attended the event in Abuja.

This MoU is expected to build up India-Nigeria collaboration especially with a focus on space science, planetary exploration, ground stations, development of micro and mini satellites and joint space research and development. 

The statement added that it provides for capacity building assistance by ISRO, exchange of scientific know-how, exchanges between academic institutes and joint symposiums/conferences. Cooperation in remote sensing, communications and navigation will benefit Nigeria greatly.

The fields of forestry, environment, agriculture, mining, watershed development and connectivity are expected to grow the most. The statement also said that this MoU will further enhance India’s capacity building assistance to Nigeria.
