India Meteorological Department (IMD) intends to use meteorological data along with geospatial and population data for assessing the impact of the cyclone in a particular area and provide the location of district-specific tailored warnings for the tropical cyclones.

The Hindustan Times quoted Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, IMD’s director-general, as saying that the damage caused to infrastructure due to cyclones is increasing world over.

With India’s growing economy, they aim to reduce the damage and economic losses to property and infrastructure. He added that the dynamic, impact-based cyclone warning will be commissioned this season.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) will collaborate with IMD and governments of coastal states to develop a Web-based Dynamic Composite Risk Atlas (Web-DCRA) for the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project.
