The Government of India launched the Swamitva Project (Land Ownership Scheme) on April 24, 2020 (Panchayati Raj Diwas) with the aim to map the rural inhabited lands using drones and latest survey methods.

The project, which is piloted by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and is to be carried out in close coordination with the Survey of India (SoI) and Panchayati Raj departments and Revenue departments of various states, will ensure streamlined planning, revenue collection and provide clarity over property rights in rural areas.

On October 11, 2020, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi launched the physical distribution of property cards under the Swamitva Project via video conferencing. This was undoubtedly an ‘historic move’ set to empower rural India.

Now, property holders will be able to download their property cards through an SMS link sent on their mobile phones. This would be followed by the physical distribution of the cards by the respective state governments.

The move will enable the villagers to use their property as a financial asset, helping them to take loans and other financial benefits from banks and other financial institutions.
